Mr. Feresten (born 1945) grew up downtown in Fall River, Massachusetts. Soon after arriving in Texas, Mr. Feresten became aware of the rich culture of the distinct African American community, which had developed as a separate city within the borders of Fort Worth. He is well recognized here for having contributed to the broader society’s understanding of that culture. The bottom of this page and page two feature other Fort Worth images, early work and four photographs from Spain.
This is our fourth show of the work of Peter Helms Feresten, one of the foremost documentary photographers in this region of the country. He came to Fort Worth, Texas in 1975 to teach photography at a local community college. He had been trained in Sociology and Religion at New York’s Columbia University, and in Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned the Master of Fine Arts degree as a Teaching Fellow.
