| Barbara Mensch is a versatile fine art photographer who
probes her
subject matter with the curiosity and stamina of a detective. A native
of
Brooklyn, New York (b. 1953), she entered Hunter College at the age of
seventeen with a passion for drawing. She earned a scholarship to study
painting in Florence, Italy. During this period, Mensch was influenced
by the work of Vittorio Di Sica and Roberto Rossellini, whose black and
white films reflected grim depictions of people in adverse conditions.
Soon after, she began a series of photographs about the New York City
waterfront, introducing the public years later to her memorable images:
Vinny, A Fillet Man, and
Beekman Dock Ice House.
Bruce
Davidson,
Mensch’s mentor, has called the South Street project (and her book on
this topic) a work of remarkable “staying power”. Mensch has resided next to the Brooklyn Bridge for years, and after long periods of preparation and research, she published a seminal book about the bridge In The Shadow Of Genius (Empire Editions 2018). In the process, she has arguably created one of the largest photographic archives of the Brooklyn Bridge and its surrounding docklands. Images from this collection have been represented in exhibitions, art collections, catalogues and many publications. Mensch is passionate about her exploration of the urban environment. She is currently producing a series of new portfolios, titled ”New York City On Foot”, which explores the physical, economic and social forces that drive change in our great urban centers. Currently, Mensch has been experimenting with the digital process and creating large scale images for commissions and public projects.
